what's behind door #1 made me chuckle!
I disagree I like the ones with the temperature controls, I don't like manufacturers taking away my control of a tool. I have ran treatments going into Winter when I have had to increase the temps a bit and even lower it a few degree in the heat of Fall. Beyond that they look to be a great product a little expensive for my wallet but a good product, isn't the producer/designer in Europe? Thanks for sharing your time Brad, Blessed Days...
Good to see your back up a running your apiary. Looking good!
Hope you feel better soon! Our honey flow here in MI slowed a bit but has just picked back up. Hope yours kicks in real soon!
These vaporizers are REALLY good, you'll love em :)
Hope you're feeling better. Honeybflow in my part of NE Indiana has been fairly poor, or it could be i didn't do as good a job of swarm prevention as I should have. Hope your flow goed well.
It's been really dry here everything was dying then it rained everything got wet it blew trees down so I don't know if it was good cuz it was dry or good it's wet and there's trees down imagine be careful what you ask for in the way you asked for it
Good morning Brad!
Hey Brad. 100% double deeps for winter. Its best for cold climate and its really easy to make splits and manage in spring
Great idea to do those on the sides like that . Do you do all your brood frames like that or do you do a select few in a brood box ??. Thanks
Hi, Kathy. I usually run one story frame in each colony in position number three.
@@ThatBeeMan Thanks I have not had good luck with drone comb so I think I will give this a try. Thanks
@@kathyhathaway8823 I should have shown how I make them. Let me know if you have any questions on that side of it.
I've got some of them because I made my own equipment including frames so their foundationless. Good information
Good Morning my friend.😁Blessed Days Brad... I believe for my sized operation I think I may start making those 2/3rs worker and 1/3 drone/open instead of the 50/50.
Another use of drone brood in the spring is it will notify you that once they are about to emerge, it's likely close enough to the time to start queen rearing your first graft.
🇺🇦💛💙🇨🇦 🙋 In our country they often call it, no matter where they stand: 1.Dadant-Blatt boxes 2.Langstroth-Root boxes 3.super ( "magazin" (like a "store"))
🇺🇦💛💙🇨🇦 🐝 Hi Brad. My opinion is deep singles. And protect from wind, mice and other things that may disturb the bees during winter. Bees usually tolerate cold well if there is enough honey. Thank you very much for the video
They are very useful and better that wax cardboard boxes. Agree with the issues you raise, i just use tap to keep them closed for transport.
🇺🇦💛💙🇨🇦 🙋 I did the same work in my apiary when I had the same problems. I think you're doing everything right. Thank you for the video.
Excellent instructional for newbies!
Could you do a quick picture of how you arrange your frames in this I been doing internal feeder 1 or 2 empty frames and brood and extra shake of bees is this enough bees? Thank you!
I tape the entrances and lids closed when transporting. Robbing is hard to manage with them. I put a board, cardboard or something on the top of them due to our extreme heat here in South Carolina. Thanks Brad. 5:09
My biggest complaints are the door staying closed as you mentioned and the frame rests always coming out. I add a piece of tape to the doors when I transport them because those doors always seem to come open in transport. Great product review video! Take Care!
Interesting. I've never seen a detailed video on these things. I appreciate it.
I picked one up as you mentioned with my fingers under the finger grip and the bees stung me through the ventilation gaps. Is it just me?
It's not just you. The bees hang out under there due to the ventilation slots. Thanks for watching!
I use deeps for supers and take the honey out put pro nucs to deal with the weight. I also put the frame with the queen in them since they are so light.
I found the same where it jammed when open and not easy to slide on some. They are bee tight when closed but not racoon tight in my case unfortunately. Too much burr comb made if bees left inside too long. But I'm still a fan of sorts.
I don’t know what’s the use of your video maybe I should throw parties maybe I should are you a beekeeper are you supposed to know what they need I don’t do inspections …. You lazy to do inspection on your house go through the frames and find out what’s going on what kind of beekeeper are you
Just a side note I have always always ran a deep an a medium brood setup BUT I do not like using that medium. I run into things quite often where I wish I had double deep or just a single deep. It just causes problems ever now an then when needing to switch frames around . Yes for my age an health the med. does come in handy also . So the answers are . I do not know which way to go on that part . Now on over winter in singles or deep I think if it was me I think I would try say maybe a dozen of each but . I have watched Ian for quite a few years an it looks like at times he runs really really close in stores in singles but that is inside an I would guess it would not be a lot different outside or maybe they may use a little more food if they get a little fly time being outside . I am not a lot of help I just like to give my two cents worth. Thanks again
Hello I also used medium frames for comb honey but a few years ago I started using shallow well that does work but it has its down side so next year I will for sure go back to using mediums . I was going to this year but just didn’t have the time I needed to switch over. The med. has a lot more flexibility with them an uses . Also I use to just use the starter strips but the bees were bad about putting a lot of brood cells in it so I went back to using the thin foundation just for comb honey an it works great . WOW your yard is sure getting fuller an fuller . Thanks
I have a wagon just like that & I do the exact same thing. Move a hive about a foot a day. It's slow, but it works.
I'm an hr south of you and have been overwintering singles and doubles outside. Both work well but as far as fall mite treatments I prefer singles because it's more cost effective but love the doubles for ease of mind as being light on stored in a cold long spring. My doubles always brood up faster but the singles seem to catch up quickly. I like the idea of single deep till fall treatments are done then slapping a medium of pre filled/capped stores as insurance. But I don't have mediums. Definitely try different configuration so you can compare 😊
Hi, What plastic nucs were you using at the start of the video? Thanks
Hi Gwenyn. Thanks for watching! Those are ProNucs. They are made by Bee-Pros bee-pros.com/ and can be found at most bee supply outlets in North America. I'll soon be putting up a video that talks about their features.
two comments: first one from what I've heard there seems to be 2-5% of unselected populations that have vsh or other mite resistance mechanisms. I too would be very much interested in grafting off those survivors! Second: Northern Wisconsin, We over winter outside singles with insulation over top. But I am testing out some doubles this year only to see if I can get bigger populations in spring for splits. I also overwintered 5 over 5. as well as a neighbor with singles and 6 frame nucs in a shed. All have similar overwinter. outdoor colonies get started sooner. But struggle more when we get nig spring temp swings. It will be interesting to follow your experience.
You mention zombies several times, what are you talking about?
Zombies are just resource nucs. They are usually made up of queens that aren't producing as well as I need but are still laying. Those resources are used for nucs and queen rearing cell builders. They would otherwise be pinched so the term Zombie was coined as they are more or less the walking dead. Thanks for watching.
I love all the bee work this week in your video! I am glad you are on trac for a good rebound year! Thanks brad
I started marking queens by hand this year. It was pretty intimidating at first but not it's no big deal. Probably took 10-15 before it became second nature. Much quicker and I honestly think it's safer for the queen. Great video this week! Take Care!
We are in south west minnesota. We run 150-200, and winter about 100 inside and the rest outside. Been successful with singles either way, but are going to mostly doubles just because we have a hard time getting them to take syrup in the spring. With doubles they get going in spring much better for us
Brad, I checked my hives mid week also and there was very little open brood or eggs. Definite dearth from rain and windy weather here. Flow shut down and they are stalling. I need a lot of sunny days.
My opinion is a deep and a med. I use two deeps because I dont have Med. I may buy some just for brood box. My lows in winter are -20F.
2 mediums for brood works really well for MB winters.
Thank you Brad
👍👍👍
50 /50, yes it would do go as a double this winter
Looks like it's all starting to come together nicely. If we can only get a break from this rain.
Getting stuff cleaned up, Brad is back on his game and in his happy place. 👏👏👏 That'll boost the Zombies well, that is a real nice thing about having multiple hive you have multiple options. Not sure what people that only have 1 or 2 do. 🤔Sounds like your buddy is a professional hobbyist like me.😁Many of us take our hobby as serious as the professionals we just don't want to work as hard as you pros.🤫😂 Blessed Days Brad...
I'm a beginner but I believe that in our neck of the woods a double is better if if full of bee's I'm from the upper peninsula of Michigan and my nephew got me started he never even covered them I'm learning on my own so if I'm wrong please let me know
Do you have the building specs for the jig posted anywhere?

I look forward to your Vlog each week.
Happy to hear that!
I would like to see you winter half inside and half outside. You need to leave space in between hives indoors so you can sweep up dead bees periodically and monitor for pests. The hives outdoors I think run singles fed up to a heavy weight. If they run short of feed towards the back end of winter just put fondant or candy boards on. Feeding up a double would be too much feed in fall.
Hello it does not matter it the video is long or short but it is always good to take a trip around the Bee yard , glad to see your yard is building back up nicely . I think you have them by the horns an got it going on. All these years I keep saying I am going to start my own grafting an I have everything to do it but just have not done it. It is so hard to find good queens an doing splits this year I had the same problem as I did I think it was maybe four or five years ago had trouble getting the queens back from her mating flight but it is just a thing an somehow I end up getting it all worked out it the long run an deal with it . Thanks for the trip around your Bee yard . Thanks
Good teaching moment with the last two colonies. Had my first badly mated queen this year and saw exactly what you did with the raised cells. Wish I would have thought to simply combine with another strong hive. Thanks for the sharing - always more to learn.
